Bolly-Kathak Beginner

Inspired by Devdas & Umrao Jaan, our Bolly-Kathak course is a semi-classical dance style which explores the classical foundations of Kathak whilst learning a choreographed semi-classical routine. Suitable for all levels, no prior dance experience required.

*NO CLASS 2 Dec (7 sessions over 8 weeks)
Time: Wednesdays 7.15pm (1 hour class)**Final class on 16 Dec will be 2 hrs, 6-8pm (video shoot)

    Designed for beginners, this class introduces students to Kathak-inspired movement, rhythm and technique through fun choreography set to Bollywood music. Students work towards learning and filming a complete choreography while developing their understanding of Kathak in a fun, accessible and contemporary format. During the course, you will:
     

  • Learn the basics of Kathak technique
  • Gradually learn on a Bolly-Kathak semi-classical routine
  • Have fun with a friendly group of adult dancers
  • Learn from one of Australia’s top Kathak choreographer, dancer and teacher, with over 20 years Kathak training.
  • Get weekly practice videos to support your learning outside of class
  • Have access to a private group chat (via WhatsApp), to encourage communication with other students and your teacher

Teacher – Ida Ghatge

Ida is a Kathak dancer, choreographer, and psychologist with over 20 years of experience. Trained under Guru Shri Harish Gangani and Radhika Karandikar, she specialises in the Jaipur gharana of Kathak- and holds a bachelor’s degree in Indian Classical Dance. Ida is also Creative Director of Sapphire Dance, Australia’s leading Bollywood company, and teaches Kathak at Studio J. She has training across various Indian and western commercial dance forms and additionally offers private lessons, master classes and group workshops. She has performed across Australia, Europe, India, and the US, including collaborations with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and the award-winning short film Twin Flame. A registered psychologist with a master’s in clinical psychology, Ida uses her platform to champion mental health, challenge stereotypes, and empower communities of colour through art and movement.
