Kathak Choreography Intensive Workshop
Learn how to choreograph your own dance piece in this 2 day weekend workshop! This workshop is designed for our current Kathak Level 2 & 3 students. New students may join only with prior Kathak training and must discuss suitability before enrolling.

- Develop the creative skills to choreograph your own pieces — whether you choose a pure Kathak composition or a Bolly-Kathak fusion.
- Deepen your understanding of rhythm (Laya), musicality and how to structure choreography with clarity, intention and smooth transitions.
- earn how to choose and break down music thoughtfully — with guided sections on choreographing based on Raag (melodic mood), Rasa (emotional tone), lyrics interpretation, musical instruments, and storyline.
- Students must come prepared with one song of their choice, which they will refine and choreograph throughout the duration of the course.
- Enhance Abhinaya (expression) and Anga Suddhi (clarity of movement) to convey emotional tone, narrative and artistic depth in your choreography.
- Build confidence in constructing solos, duets or group pieces using spatial formations, staging, dynamic shifts and performance presence.
- earn within a supportive, collaborative and adult-focused environment that encourages creative individuality and exploration.
- Receive guidance from an experienced Kathak choreographer and performer with expertise in both classical technique and contemporary artistic interpretation.
- Get weekly choreographic prompts, reference videos and structured practice guidance to assist with refining your work outside of class.
- Stay connected through a private WhatsApp group to share progress, receive feedback and remain inspired throughout your choreography journey.
Teacher –Ida Ghatge
Ida Ghatge is a Kathak dancer, choreographer, and psychologist with over 20 years of experience. Trained under Guru Shri Harish Gangani and Radhika Karandikar, she has mastered all three Kathak gharanas — Lucknow, Jaipur, and Banaras — and holds a bachelor’s degree in Indian Classical Dance.
She is the Creative Director of Sapphire Dance, Australia’s leading Bollywood company, and teaches all Kathak classes at Studio J. Ida has performed across Australia, Europe, India, and the US, including collaborations with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and the award-winning short film Twin Flame.
Also a registered psychologist with a master’s in clinical psychology, Ida uses her platform to champion mental health, challenge stereotypes, and empower communities of colour through art and movement.
