Kathak Choreography Intermediate – Showcase 2026

This course is designed for Kathak dancers who want to continue their journey without the constraints of traditional repertoire, examinations, or a fixed syllabus. Deepen your understanding of Kathak technique, practice & storytelling, while embracing a contemporary and evolving perspective. For those with less than 5-7 years Kathak training, please consider our Kathak Level 1 or 2 courses. New students please email us prior to enrolling.

A Kathak Course for Evolving Artists:
This course is designed for dancers with prior Kathak training who want to continue their journey without the constraints of traditional repertoire, examinations, or a fixed syllabus. It offers a space to deepen your understanding of Kathak technique, practice, and storytelling, while embracing a contemporary and evolving perspective.

Rooted in the essence of Kathak—storytelling—we honor the classical form while pushing its boundaries, allowing space for new narratives and artistic expression. This is a space for exploration, authenticity, and growth as modern Kathak practitioners.

Showcase Theme: Love — A Journey Within
This season, we explore love in its most intimate form—self-love and body love. Through a contemporary and neo-classical Kathak performance, we’ll tell a story that begins within: embracing our bodies, honoring our experiences, and reclaiming our narratives.

As part of this creative process, you will learn to expand your artistic voice—translating inner emotions, personal battles, and quiet victories into powerful movement. This is an opportunity to dive deeper into your own story and invite audiences to reflect on their own paths to self-acceptance and love.

  • This course is part of Studio J’s annual stage show. Join us on stage and live out your Kathak dance dreams with your loved ones cheering you on!!
  • Continue and enhance your training through focussed feedback on your posture and form. Further develop speed, stamina and agility.
  • Learn in a supportive and encouraging environment, geared towards adult learning.
  • Have fun with a friendly group of adult dancers.
  • Learn from one of Melbourne’s top Kathak choreographer, dancer and teacher, with over 20 years Kathak training.
  • Get weekly practice videos to support your learning outside of class.
  • Have access to a private group chat (via WhatsApp), to encourage communication with other students and your teacher.

    **PLEASE NOTE:**
    – Regular attendance throughout this course is required in order to participate in the final stage performance, including a compulsory dress rehearsal on show day. Class recordings will be available for independent catch up between classes. If you miss any sessions and have not caught up adequately, then your participation in showcase will be reviewed and may be revoked.
    – Showcase will be on Sunday 2 August at Bunjil Place Theatre, Narre Warren. Dress rehearsal is from approx 9am onwards, with performance from 6pm. Students must keep this entire day available for now – exact timings to be confirmed.
    – Unfortunately, there are no refunds, exchanges or credits for any reason.

Teacher – Ida Ghatge

Ida is a Kathak dancer, choreographer, and psychologist with over 20 years of experience. Trained under Guru Shri Harish Gangani and Radhika Karandikar, she specialises in the Jaipur gharana of Kathak- and holds a bachelor’s degree in Indian Classical Dance. Ida is also Creative Director of Sapphire Dance, Australia’s leading Bollywood company, and teaches Kathak at Studio J. She has training across various Indian and western commercial dance forms and additionally offers private lessons, master classes and group workshops. She has performed across Australia, Europe, India, and the US, including collaborations with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and the award-winning short film Twin Flame. A registered psychologist with a master’s in clinical psychology, Ida uses her platform to champion mental health, challenge stereotypes, and empower communities of colour through art and movement.
