South Semi-Classical Beginner – Showcase 2025
South Semi-classical brings out the beautiful forms of classical Indian dance and adds a modern element to South Indian cinema songs. This beginner friendly class takes inspiration from Bharatanatyam, Kathak & folk styles from across India. Join us on stage and live out your dance dreams!

- This course is part of Studio J’s annual stage show. Join us on stage and live out your dance dreams with your loved ones cheering you on!!
- Learn hand gestures (mudras), expression work, and spins (chakkars)
- Gradually learn a fully choreographed semi-classical routine to music from South Indian cinema and perform this LIVE on stage!!
- Have fun with a friendly group of adult students
- Get weekly practice videos to support your learning outside of class
- Have access to a private group chat (via WhatsApp), to encourage communication with other students and your teacher
**PLEASE NOTE:**
– Regular attendance throughout this course is required in order to participate in the final stage performance (minimum 6-7 sessions plus dress rehearsal must be attended). Class recordings will be available for independent catch up between classes. If you miss any sessions and have not caught up adequately, then your participation in showcase will be reviewed and may be revoked.
– Showcase will be on Saturday 5 July at Bunjil Place Theatre, Narre Warren. Dress rehearsal is from approx 10 or 11am onwards, with performance from 7pm. Students must keep this entire day available for now – exact timings to be confirmed.
– Unfortunately, there are no refunds, exchanges or credits for any reason.

Ashwini, a seasoned dancer with over two decades of experience, is a versatile instructor at Studio J Dance. Her expertise spans a wide range of styles, including Bharatanatyam, Garba, South Street, Kathak, Bhangra, Contemporary, and Hip Hop. A passionate advocate for dance, Ashwini believes in its power to foster community, build friendships, and cultivate grace and discipline. Leveraging her background in HR and L&D, she creates a supportive and engaging learning environment where students can thrive. Ashwini is also dancer and choreographer for Melbourne’s premiere Bollywood dance group – Sapphire Dance.
